Go to the Library!

August 22nd, 2005

Looking for something to do with preschool age kids? Go the the library! If you haven’t been to the new Downtown location, I recommend it. It has a big, nice childrens’ area with toys and seating for you. There are computers with fun learning software for even the youngest user. My son is 2 1/2 and we killed almost an hour just looking at books and playing in this area. You do have to put $1 in the meter, but I’ve never had a problem getting a space right across the street. (Just don’t let your tag expire. I learned that $50 lesson the hard way.)

There’s something going on at one of the metro library locations almost daily. For a while, we went to multiple playtimes. It gets you out of the house and around other moms and kids. Check out the schedule at www.metrolibrary.org.

At first I went thinking I’d make friends. This is easier for some than others. Making new friends at 32 is different. It’s kinda like dating. You have to have an opening line. “How old is your daughter?” is the equivalent of “Come here often?” in my book. But it’s somewhere to start. And you may get a few minutes of adult conversation out of it before you have to go mediate a toy battle. The conversation will probably be about the kids, but it’s better than nothing.

Here’s another little tip from me to you: Do not try to to a blog when your 2 year old needs a nap. Screaming and crying do not make it very easy.
