NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma completed a 50-play scrimmage Wednesday afternoon in Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. It was the final preseason scrimmage for the Sooners prior to their Sept. 3 season opener against TCU.
OU head coach Bob Stoops said he was pleased with the workout, which was closed to the public.
“It was pretty decent,†he said. “It was similar to what we’ve seen up to now.â€
Stoops said the practice provide opportunities for several of the team’s younger players.
“We were trying to gain some experience for the younger guys,†said. “They were on the field for a number of snaps.â€
The OU head coach said that no immediate announcement was expected as to the starting quarterback selection. He said it could be later this week or some time next week.
With the announcement of the loss of Larry Birdine, defensive end, to injury on Tuesday, Stoops was asked if he had greater concerns along the defensive line.
“We play who we’ve got, we’ve always said that,†Stoops answered. “We’ll have a defensive end out there and we will expect him to play well.â€
After Wednesday’s practice was completed, freshman wide receiver Manuel Johnson required medical attention for a heat-related ailment. He was responsive to treatment.
