A week ago the Oklahoma Sooners received relief in the form of Joey Halzle, a 6-4, 215 pound Quarterback from Huntington Beach, California. This dual-threat player from Golden West Community College who would give the Sooners the freedom to move Paul Thompson to receiver full-time and provide a quality backup to Rhett Bomar was shocked to find out that Chuck Long was leaving Oklahoma. However, the former Chuck Long recruit, Halzle confirmed his commitment to Bob Stoops on Saturday.

For those of you struggling to accept Oklahoma’s last second loss to Texas Tech on Saturday it is time for you to know something, the system is decidedly imperfect. Officiating itself has its flaws, but this joke of a replay system needs a serious overhaul. There is a general idea that some replay is better than none, another flawed thought. As a fan your only hope is that the same people that tweak the BCS every year can take a look at the comedy of errors that has accompanied this horrid system this off season and rethink the way it is utilized.

The Oklahoma Sooners take their “come from ahead and win†style to Lubbock this weekend where they will try to make a case for an invitation to the Cotton Bowl. OU will try to beat their main competition for that bowl, those crazy Red Raiders, you know, the ones who joined the ranks of Florida Atlantic, Montana State, and Arkansas State last weekend in Stillwater. Can Oklahoma win again on the road in a tough environment? Depends on which Sooners and Red Raiders show up.

As the plane flew over Owen Field fans gasped and half-heartedly agreed with the sentiment that flew behind. “Hey Gary, Delta’s ready when you are.†Oklahoma fans didn’t know that they had just begun to embark on the worst five year period in the school’s history anymore than they knew they were being pummeled by one of college football’s newest legends.

In a season of firsts for Bob Stoops he finally got to enjoy one on Saturday. Oklahoma had not won in Lincoln since 1987 and there is not a soul before this season who believed that streak would come to an end the weak after the Sooners needed double overtime to beat Baylor…in Norman. Stoops, who lost in September for the first time in his Sooner career and lost a season opener for the first time since his days with Bill Snyder in Manhattan, won in Lincoln for the first time as a head coach. Though as much wasn’t on the line, it was almost as good a game as the one he lost there in 2001.

As three quarters of a sellout crowd threw their hands up in jubilation after Oklahoma survived their own dominant performance over Baylor instinct was to be unimpressed. After all, OU had outscored Baylor 255-46 during the Stoops Era while rolling to three Big 12 Championships, playing in four BCS Bowls, and winning the 2000 National Championship. When instinct passed and time was given to consider what had happened on Owen Field one can’t help but notice, these kids are getting better.

Know what the most entertaining, exciting aspect of sports is? Overreacting. There’s nothing like it! Acting like the world has come to an end after a sub-par half of a season is what makes it worth watching. Remember when Bob Stoops was the class of college football and everyone thought he was invincible? Obviously he’s not now, these last seven games are probably a much better example of his ability than the first 78 of his regime.

Oklahoma and Kansas will make a little history this Saturday when they meet at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. For the first time in their 99 meetings these long-time foes will play on a neutral field.
