The Heup(el) Returns

December 23rd, 2005

Sooner fans have their arms outstretched with a slight curve ready to embrace Josh Heupel, welcoming the Sooner legend back into the fold. Heupel returns to take the place of new San Diego State Head Coach Chuck Long as QB Coach after Bob Stoops named Kevin Wilson Offensive Coordinator last Saturday. The former All-American returns after a year long stint in Arizona with Mike Stoops as Tight Ends Coach.

Stoops spoke glowingly of Heupel in the press conference officially announcing his arrival. “I appreciate his leadership skill, his knowledge of the game and his feel for coaching. Not only is he gifted in teaching and scheming, but he also has demonstrated organizational and recruiting skills that will be great for our program.”

The move appeared to be a no-brainer to Bob Stoops, who stated after promoting Wilson that, “I have a direction in mind and I will work towards that.” The Sooner head man has always expressed the utmost respect for Heupel and his football knowledge and spared no time in making a move. This rapid movement is in the best interest of an extremely young offense that still needs some sort of continuity to grow.

“I’m extremely excited about being back here and being a part of this football program and university,” said Heupel at today’s press conference. “It was a great opportunity for me to come back and coach quarterbacks. That’s something I definitely want to get back to in my career as a coach, and there’s not a better place to do that than right here.”

Heupel comes in to coach Rhett Bomar, a young quarterback with everything you need to one day become a star. This will be nearly seamless for the duo because Josh Heupel was still at OU last season when Bomar red-shirted behind Jason White. Heupel’s knowledge of the game and mastery of the film room will surely benefit Bomar and incoming JUCO QB Joey Halzle.
