Sooners & Cowboys both Nearing QB Decisions

The discussion started immediately after last football season in both Stillwater and Norman. Sooner fans and Cowboy fans alike have debated over the past seven or eight months about who would quarterback their respected clubs when the 2005 seasons kickoff in September.

Will it be Donovan Woods or Bobby Reid at OSU? Is it going to be Rhett Bomar or Paul Thompson in Norman?

With both teams a little over a week away from their season openers, coaches will more than likely make a decision on starters at both schools in the next few days.

After Wednesday’s practice in Norman, OU Offensive Coordinator Chuck Long said he expects to name the Sooners starting QB today or Friday. He said the competition is very close.

In Stillwater, it’s much more likely that Head Coach Mike Gundy will choose to split action between his two quarterbacks. Although Gundy teased the media earlier this week by saying he was ready to name a starter, he’s backed off his comments recently and seems to be leaning towards splitting time.

Who do we think will start game one for both schools?

For the Sooners, most likely Paul Thompson will get the nod for game one. Although he’s not as flashy as the redshirt freshman Bomar, he seems to be the least risky of the two. You can expect the competition to continue though similar to when the Sooners had a great battle at QB between Jason White and Nate Hybl. It could be a roller coaster for the first few games until one QB separates himself from the other.

Moving on to OSU, look for redshirt freshman Bobby Reid to get the start in the opener. If Woods had impressed coaches enough to keep his starting job, you would think Gundy and company would have already made the decision to go with him. No matter which QB wins the starting position for the opener, expect to see both get about equal action.

Nice article. It’s good to hear about some real football, instead of baldknobber football.
