Sooners 2005 – State of Emergency

October 14th, 2005

Listening to local talk radio hosts in Oklahoma and reading newspaper columns across the country, you’d sure think it’s time for OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione to proclaim the 2005 Football Season a Natural Disaster. After the Sooners got their tails whipped last Saturday 45-12 to the Longhorns, many of the local media are ready to call in FEMA and ask for Federal assistance.

Let’s just stop for a minute and examine the facts. The Sooners got beat Saturday by the number two ranked team in the country. It was a team led by a legitimite Heisman Trophy candidate and a pretty darn good supporting cast. Many Texas media pundits are calling this the best group of Longhorns in 50 years.

To sum it up, the Sooners got whipped Saturday by a superior team. Superior teams are supposed to beat up on unranked teams. Haven’t the Sooners ripped apart a few good ranked and unranked teams over the past few years (including a team down south that wears burnt orange)?

So the Sooners are 2-3 with losses to #2 Texas, #12 UCLA and #25 TCU. What many pundits thought looked like an early season cake-walk has turned out to be a pretty stout season so far.

We’ve talked about Texas, but what about UCLA and TCU? Maybe you didn’t see it, but UCLA took care of Cal last week and has the sixth best offense in the country. TCU is the one the Sooners really wish they could have back. Even though the Horned Frogs were led by a 5th year senior QB who had an impressive career record, the Sooners should have won that game.

The next six weeks are going to be the test. If the Sooners roll over and go lose more than one game, then you can truly call this season a disaster.

If the Sooners run the table and finish the season winning 5 of 6 or better, then be content with this season. The law of averages are going to dictate that teams eventually have down years. What goes around comes around.
