A Peak at Weekend Number Two

Tulsa at Oklahoma (11:30 am, Fox Sports Net)- Oklahoma will come out firing like many teams during the Stoops Era have when they feel there is something to prove. The Sooners will score a lot early, lead somewhere around 21 or 24 to zero after the first 20 minutes, then sputter until the fourth quarter. Look for Rhett Bomar to make big plays and big mistakes, even resulting in a Golden Hurricane score or two. However, Oklahoma will gain some confidence in its offense and continue to show defensive improvement in a 38-13 victory.
Notre Dame at Michigan (11:00 am, ABC)- The Irish got off to a great start with a pounding of Pittsburgh at Pitt, but time will show Pitt has many holes. This doesn’t mean Notre Dame isn’t any good, but they aren’t good enough to win in the Big House. Michigan wins in a 4th quarter runaway, 34-17.
South Carolina at Georgia (4:30 pm, ESPN)- Steve Spurrier’s boys started like a house of fire in the first quarter against Central Florida, then sputtered to the finish line. Georgia pounded Boise State like they were the old Boise State. Georgia will pull away after a tough first half, 41-14.
Wake Forest at Nebraska (6:00 pm, TBS)- This is a tricky one. Both teams showed their abilities to suck last week when Nebraska squeaked out a 25-7 victory over the powerhouse Black Bears of Maine and Wake Forest lost to Vanderbilt, VANDERBILT, 24-20. When two teams this uninteresting and boring get together home field matters. Nebraska wins in the last five minutes, 22-20.
Texas at Ohio State (7:00 pm, ABC)- This is the reason we love college football. The pageantry will be as good as it gets in Columbus. The fans, the bands, and…oh…the football teams are pretty good too. Vince Young is being touted as the difference in this game and he will be as his lack of ability to complete passes when the game is on the line will again be highlighted. Everyone touts the Rose Bowl as the beginning of a turnaround of “toughness†for the Longhorns. Does anybody remember the Texas Defense in that game? They gave up 37 points to a Michigan team that scored above that only three times in 2004, against Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, and Michigan State. I’m not saying Texas isn’t good, but there was good and bad to take out of that Rose Bowl. Ohio State rides their defense and Ted Ginn to a 23-16 victory.
LSU at Arizona State (7:45 pm, ESPN)- This is about impossible to pick. The Sun Devils opened with a thrashing of a terrible Temple team 63-16. It’s impossible to know how LSU will come out after Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, remember this one should have been at LSU. Will they be inspired to carry the hometown torch for a few hours? Or has all the uncertainty worn them completely down where football is an afterthought? Maybe this is a sentimental pick, LSU rolls in Tempe, 38-23.
